EmotionalWELLNESS

Emotional wellness involves your ability to cope with life stress, express emotions, and feel positive about your life. It includes being aware and accepting your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors by managing them in a healthy way.

DOOM-SCROLLING. ELECTION ANXIETY. COVID FATIGUE. HOW DO I COPE WITH THE STRESS?

ELECTION

ANXIETY

With this particular upcoming election, it feels like there is a lot at stake. We are in our third wave of the COVID pandemic, worried about healthcare, our finances,  social unrest due to police brutality, and international conflict. We grapple with feeling like we have very little control in this larger than life dilemma. If you are feeling this way, you are not alone. According to the American Psychological Association, over ⅔ of Americans report that the upcoming election is a significant source of stress in their lives and almost 80% of folks are concerned about the future of the country.  It can feel especially overwhelming when our friends and family may be on the opposite side of the issue. We feel helpless, unheard and even betrayed. This is absolutely normal. AND we can make a plan to care for ourselves through this difficult time.

GET GROUNDED & TAKE A DEEP BREATH

  • Pause, Take A Deep Breath

    • When we're feeling overwhelmed and in distress, it is important to remember to breathe. Not only does deep breathing help us calm down, it gives us a small break from the onslaught of information (doom-scrolling) we may be having trouble processing.

  • Get Grounded!

    • Grounding is a technique that helps keep you in the present, by helping to reorient you to the 'here-and-now'. Grounding skills can be helpful in managing overwhelming feelings or intense anxiety.

    • Plant Your Feet

      • Sit up straight in a chair, feeling the chair supporting you. Place both feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes. Feel your feet touching the floor. Take a deep breath in, and exhale. Repeat

Reflection question

  • What is causing me the most worry?

  • Who do I trust to share my fears and concerns?
